HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates sophomore Matthew Gagne was officially recognized as All-NESCAC, as the New England Small College Athletic Conference announced its 2013 Men's Swimming & Diving All-Conference Team on Tuesday.
All-NESCAC honors are given to individuals and relay teams who finish among the top three in each event at the NESCAC Men's Swimming & Diving Championships, held last weekend at Wesleyan University.
Gagne (Winnetka, Ill.) received his first career All-NESCAC award for his third-place finish in the 50-yard butterfly on Friday. Gagne swam the third-fastest prelim time in the event, at 22.79 seconds, then finished third again in the A Final of the event in 22.62 seconds, breaking the team record of 22.71 set by Won Ho Chang in 2011. It was one of three team records Gagne rewrote or had a hand in rewriting over the weekend -- he and teammates Matt Johns '13 (Seaford, N.Y.), Andrew Briggs '15 (York, Maine) and Nick Karlson '13 (Wayland, Mass.) broke the 400 medley relay record on Friday, at 3:26.92, and Gagne broke his own record in the 100 fly in a time trial on Sunday, at 49.48 seconds.
Bates senior captain Travis Jones (Ithaca, N.Y.) was also formally recognized as Four-Year High Point Diver of the meet, for outscoring all other seniors at NESCACs over the past four years.
