WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Bates women's swimming and diving team took on both NESCAC opponent Connecticut College and non-conference opponent Wellesley on Saturday, falling shy of both in team scoring, while the Bates men's team fell in head-to-head scoring against Connecticut College.
For the Bates women, senior Catherine Sparks (New Canaan, Conn.) was the lone event winner, taking the 50-yard breaststroke in 31.03. Also for the Bobcats, first-year Whitney Paine (Moultonborough, N.H.) took second in both the 50 back (28.53) and the 100 back (1:00.96).
Bates sophomore Andrew Briggs (York, Maine) won the 50-yard breaststroke in 27.82, the Bates men's team's lone first-place finisher in a swimming event. First-year Porter Harrast (Decatur, Ga.) scored 236.35 points to win the 1-meter diving competition, while at 3 meters senior captain Travis Jones (Ithaca, N.Y.) edged Harrast 239.65 to 235.25.
Bates competes at The Maine Event on Saturday, Feb. 9 at Colby, followed by the NESCAC Championships: the women's NESCACs are at Bowdoin on Feb. 15-17, and the men's NESCACs are at Wesleyan Feb. 22-24.
