LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's basketball team outscored rival Colby 46-33 in the second half en route to a 75-66 non-league victory on Tuesday night.
Sophomore Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) and junior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) scored 20 and 18 points for Bates (8-5), while Tracy Nale (Waterville, Maine) scored a game-high 24 points and Alison Cappelloni (Sudbury, Mass.) added 20 for Colby (2-8).
Colby (2-8) ran out to an early 9-2 run, and though the Mules lost the lead temporarily, a 7-0 run regained the lead, and their momentum carried them into a 33-29 edge at the half, fueled by a 27-15 edge on the boards.
Bates (8-5) shot 64.3 percent from the floor in the second half, compared to 33.3 percent in the first half, and gained the lead for good on a layup by Kostakis with 16:41 left to play in the game, though the Bobcats couldn't shake off the Mules for more than a 12-point edge.
The Bobcats also regrouped on the boards, outrebounding the Mules 18-14 in the second period.
Kostakis grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for Bates, while junior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) dished out nine assists.
Cappelloni grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds for Colby, and Katie McCabe added nine rebounds.
Bates opens its NESCAC schedule with a game at Trinity College Friday at 7 p.m.
