Katie Franklin '07 scored a career-high 14 points for Bates.

AMHERST, Mass. -- The Amherst College women’s basketball team snapped a three-game losing skid by defeating visiting Bates College in a conference match-up, 65-51.

The Lord Jeffs improve to 8-7 (1-1 NESCAC) on the season, while the Bobcats fall to 9-6 (1-1 NESCAC).

Three Amherst players finished in double figures, with first-year Samantha Swensen (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) leading all scorers with 22 points.

Senior captain Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) led the Bobcats with a team- and career-high 14 points, adding six rebounds and three assists. Junior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for Bates, while sophomore Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) put in a solid performance with eight points and seven rebounds.

After junior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) knocked down a three-pointer to put Bates ahead 5-2 early on, Amherst went on an 8-0 run to control the opening five minutes of the game. The Bobcats gained their composure and hung with the Jeffs, eventually taking a 15-14 lead with 11:07 remaining in the half, but neither team would let the other gain enough momentum to pull away, as the first half featured 11 lead changes and six ties. Amherst finished the half with a slight edge, using a 7-2 run in the final three minutes to head into the locker room with a 35-31 lead.

Amherst carried its momentum into the second frame, opening the half on a 13-3 run to take a 48-34 lead with 14:25 remaining in regulation. Not to let the game get out of hand, Bates went on an 11-4 run to cut the deficit to seven points, but that was as close as the Bobcats would get. Amherst’s lead hovered around 10 points for the remainder of the game and grew to as high as 14 points, as the Jeffs held on for a 65-51 victory.

The Amherst offense was humming throughout the game, shooting at 52% in the first half and 46% in the second. Swensen added six rebounds, two blocks and a pair of steals to her game-high 22 points, while senior tri-captain Jenny Muller (Andover, Mass.) and junior tri-captain Stefanie Reiff (Hinsdale, Ill.) finished in double figures with 12 and 13 points, respectively.

Bates next plays at Tufts on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 3 p.m.
