BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin College junior Maria Noucas scored a team-high 15 points, with five three-pointers, as the Polar Bear women's basketball team took a 64-57 non-conference win over Bates on Tuesday evening. The Polar Bears improve to 16-5 this season while the Bobcats dip to 12-8.

A back-and-forth first-half saw Bates junior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) and senior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) combine for 25 points to give the Bobcats a 30-27 edge at intermission.

After sophomore Danielle Schaefers (Barrington, R.I.) connected on a jumper for Bates with 12:28 to play, Bowdoin replied with an 8-0 spurt to take the lead for good. Jill Anelauskas posted consecutive lay-ups before Colleen Sweeney and Katie Bergeron hit four straight free throws to give the hosts a 44-40 edge with 8:39 to go.

Bates was able to trim the lead to two points on three occasions with less than seven minutes to play, but couldn't find the equalizer.

Noucas (15) led four Bowdoin players in double figures, as Jill Anelauskas (14), Colleen Sweeney (11) and Katie Bergeron (10, six rebounds) also cracked double-digits.

Beckwith (19) and Kostakis (11) led the Bobcats in scoring, while senior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) collected five points and 11 assists on the evening. Sophomore Kellie Goodridge (Merrimack, N.H.) scored eight points to go with a team-high seven rebounds, helping Bates create a 39-35 advantage on the boards despite the absence of flu-ridden senior center Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) from the lineup.

The Bobcats will play their fifth and sixth road games in a row this weekend when they travel to Williams on Friday for a 7 p.m. game, followed by a date with Middlebury on Saturday at 3 p.m.
