HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates College senior Meg Coffin and junior Val Beckwith were both voted First Team All-State by the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association, the MWBCA announced on Thursday. It is Coffin's third time on the All-State team and Beckwith's second.
The awards come a day after both players earned All-Conference distinction from the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
After missing the 2006-07 season due to injury, Coffin returned this winter for her final year with the Bobcats and once again ranked among the conference leaders in multiple statistical categories. The 2006 NESCAC Player of the Year, she averaged a team-high 15.3 points (5th in NESCAC), 9.4 rebounds (4th) and 1.58 blocks (3rd) per game while shooting at a 56.4 percent clip (2nd) through 19 outings, collecting nine double-doubles in the process. Coffin closed the book on her career fourth all-time at Bates in scoring and rebounding with 1,252 points and 789 boards.
Beckwith led or shared the team scoring lead for the Bobcats in 12 games. She ranked seventh in the conference in scoring with 14.8 points per game while hitting free throws at an .821 clip, fourth in the league. Beckwith became only the second Bates woman to score her 1,000th career point as a junior, and is currently 15th on the Bobcats' all-time list with 1,013 points. Like Coffin, her strengths extend beyond scoring. She ranked 10th in the NESCAC in assists (2.7 apg), and fourth in steals (2.28 spg).
