WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Senior Meg Coffin scored 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Bates College women's basketball team to a 72-60 NESCAC road win at Williams College on Friday night.
Bates raised its overall record to 13-8 and its league mark to 3-3, while halting the Ephs' (15-6, 4-2 NESCAC) five-game winning streak.
Coffin (Westford, Mass.) shot 8-for-11 from the field while posting her third straight double-double and her seventh this season.
Junior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) tallied 16 points on the night for Bates, while senior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) added 10 points, six rebounds and a game-high seven assists. Senior Matia Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) scored six points with seven rebounds, and now stands at 994 points in her college career.
Williams' Mika Peterman led all scorers with 24 points on 9-of-19 shooting, while Taylor Shea notched her second consecutive double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Chessie Jackson chipped in 7 points and 9 boards.
Down 15-12 with 12:37 to play in the first half, Williams put together a 10-0 run to take a 22-15 lead with 7:38 left in the first half. Barton drained a deep three with a hand in her face to knot the score at 26 apiece with 4:06 left in the
first frame, and Bates headed into the locker room with a six-point lead, 39-33.
Bates continued to expand its lead and went ahead by as many as 13 points halfway into the second period. Williams chipped away at the advantage, coming as close as seven points at various points in the final 10 minutes of play. With 1:40 on the clock, Williams resorted to fouling, but a 10-of-15 effort from the charity stripe by Bates was enough to hold off the Ephs for the win.
Bates will play at Middlebury on Saturday at 3 p.m. in another NESCAC contest.
