Women's basketball team pulls away from Trinity, 68-51

Matia Kostakis '08 notched her 23rd career double-double.

LEWISTON, Maine -- The trio of Meg Coffin, Val Beckwith and Matia Kostakis combined for 50 points and 31 rebounds to lead Bates College over Trinity College 68-51 Friday night in the NESCAC women's basketball conference opener for both teams.

The host Bobcats (10-4 overall, 1-0 NESCAC) outrebounded the visiting Bantams (8-4, 0-1) by a 49-36 margin, including 22 on the offensive glass, leading Bates to a 23-0 edge in second-chance points.

Coffin (Westford, Mass.) scored 21 points with 11 rebounds. Kostakis (Andover, Mass.) also notched a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) added 19 points and 9 rebounds. Senior Sarah Barton (Portsmouth, N.H.) contributed a game-high six assists.

Trinity sophomore Claire Arnstein (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Bantams with 18 points, with first-year Rebecca Cohn (San Francisco, Calif.) chipping in with 12 points. Sophomore Christine Card (Waterbury, Conn.) added six points and a team-high eight rebounds.

Bates took the lead for good at 11-10 with 11:09 left in the first half, but Trinity hung within 10 points until 15:44 remained in regulation. The Bantams closed the gap to five at 47-42 with 9:50 to play after a three-pointer by Arnstein. After a Bates timeout, the Bobcats ripped off seven straight points to build the lead back to 12 with 6:27 left. Bates padded the lead further to as high as 19 points before the final buzzer.

Making strong contributions off the bench for Bates were first-year Christine McCall (Lowell, Mass.) with three points, five rebounds and two assists, and sophomore Danielle Schaefers (Barrington, R.I.) with five rebounds and two assists.

Bates head coach Jim Murphy '69 recorded his 250th career win leading the Bobcats, against 97 losses. Murphy entered the season ranked 31st in Division III in career winning percentage (.721).

Bates will host Amherst College tomorrow at 3 p.m., while Trinity travels to Tufts to play the Jumbos at 2 p.m.
