HADLEY, Mass. -- A day after claiming the NESCAC and MWBCA Women's Basketball Player of the Week awards for the second time this season, Bates senior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) took home the Player of the Week award from the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) and New England Co-Player of the Week from the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC).
It's the second week in a row a Bobcat has won the NESCAC and NEWBA honors, after junior Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) also earned them both a week ago.
Beckwith led the Bobcats to a 3-0 week and a 2-0 start to the NESCAC slate, averaging 21.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game while shooting .512 from the floor (22-for-43) and .810 from the foul line (17-for-21). On Tuesday against Colby, Beckwith scored the game-winning layup as time expired in the Bobcats' 73-71 win, as she finished the contest with 21 points. During Friday’s 80-67 victory over Middlebury, Beckwith had a season-high 26 points along with nine rebounds and seven assists, going 10-for-16 from the field. She closed the week with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists in Saturday’s 90-67 decision over Williams. Beckwith is second in the NESCAC in scoring, averaging 18.3 points per game.
It is the third NESCAC Player of the Week honor for Beckwith in her career, and the third, fourth, fifth and sixth times this season she has won a POTW award. On Nov. 24 she claimed the season's first NESCAC Playera of the Week award, and on Dec. 8 she garnered Co-Player of the Week honors from the MWBCA.
Beckwith and the Bobcats (13-4, 2-0 NESCAC) play at Bowdoin this Friday at 7 p.m., followed by a game at Colby on Saturday at 3 p.m.
