No. 12 Polar Bears pull away from women's basketball

Lauren Dobish '12 made all five of her shots in the second half, en route to 11 points.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bowdoin College's stifling defense held the Bates College women's basketball team under 30 percent shooting as the No. 12-ranked Polar Bears won 63-42 in a NESCAC contest Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

Bowdoin (13-2, 1-1 NESCAC) received a game-high 17 points by Caitlin Hynes and 11 points from Katie Bergeron. Hynes scored 13 points in the second half as the Polar Bears shot 58.3 percent from the field in the second half to pull away. Ellery Gould grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, helping Bowdoin to a 40-28 edge on the boards.

Sophomore Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) and Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.) scored 11 points apiece to lead the Bobcats (9-9, 0-3 NESCAC), with all of Dobish's scoring coming in the second half, on 5-of-5 shooting from the field. Yanofsky added a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) was held scoreless, but she dished out a game-high seven assists and grabbed five rebounds.

Bates hit just 1 of 19 three-point attempts, including 0-for-10 in the second half, foiling its attempts to get back into the game.

Both teams started out the game cold, particularly the Bobcats, who shot 5-for-20 (25%) from the field in the first half, including 1-for-9 behind the three-point arc, while the Polar Bears managed an 11-for-29 (.379) effort. Bowdoin jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first 11 minutes of the game. As the Bobcats turned ice cold, Gould hit a three-pointer with 3:04 left in the half to extend the lead to 25-10. Bates closed the gap to 25-14 at intermission on the strength of a three-point play by senior Kellie Goodridge (Merrimack, N.H.) with 1:08 to go.

Hynes and Gould hit back-to-back threes to open the second half as Bowdoin reasserted control with a 31-14 lead with 17:29 left. With Bates continuing to struggle offensively, the lead opened up to a game-high 41-20 on a layup by Kaitlin Donahoe with 11:56 left.

Bates hosts Colby tomorrow at 2 p.m. in another NESCAC matchup; Bowdoin plays at Tufts tomorrow.
