Women's basketball beats Maine Maritime for tourney title







CASTINE, Maine -- The Bates College women's basketball team leaped out to a 24-point lead before halftime and cruised to a 76-53 victory over host Maine Maritime Tuesday in the championship game of the Mariner Classic.

Bates raised its record to 8-3 this season, while the Mariners dropped to 4-5.

Senior Lauren Yanofsky (Belmont, Mass.), named tournament MVP, notched game highs of 21 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals, all in a mere 18 minutes of action. First-year Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while sophomore Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.), who was named to the All-Tournament Team, scored 12 points to go with a game-high six assists.

Sophomore Kelsey Flaherty (South Portland, Maine) scored 11 points, her second straight game in double digits, and first-year Taryn O'Connell (Georgetown, Mass.) posted another solid game with nine points and six boards. First-year Bri Hawkins (South Portland, Maine) added six points and four rebounds.

Sam Goda was the lone Maine Maritime player in double figures, with 14 points.

Flaherty scored all 11 of her points, and Yanofsky had 13 points and five rebounds in the first half, when the Bobcats outscored the Mariners 44-20 behind 54.5 percent shooting from the field. Bates took the lead over for good at 6-4 on a three-pointer by Beaulieu, which started a 13-0 run over a span of only two minutes. Yanofsky finished off the spurt with a three and two straight layups for a 16-4 lead with 14:18 to go in the first half.

Maine Maritime cut the lead to as low as six, but Bates went on another run late in the half, reeling off 13 unanswered points to extend their lead from 29-18 to 42-18 with a minute left.

The Bobcats led by 20 or more points for all but 22 seconds of the second half.

Bates returns to action on Thursday at 7 p.m. with a non-league contest at rival Bowdoin.
