LEWISTON, Maine -- Colby College staked itself to a 40-33 lead at halftime and held off the Bates College women's basketball team in its comeback attempt in the second half for a 77-71 NESCAC victory on Saturday afternoon.
It is Colby's (13-2, 2-1 NESCAC) second straight win over Bates after a string of 14 straight wins for the Bobcats in the series. Bates (9-10, 0-4 NESCAC) lost 82-68 at Colby in a non-conference game on Jan. 12.
Kelly Potvin led the Mules with 14 points, while Rachael Mack submitted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Diane Manduca scored nine points, including a three-pointer with 1:02 left that boosted Colby's lead to 73-69, and a layup with 21 seconds remaining that again put the Mules ahead by four at 75-71. Manduca added a team-high six assists. Aarika Ritchie added 10 points and five assists, while Alison Cappelloni contributed nine points and eight boards.
For Bates, Lauren Yanofsky poured in 19 points in 17 minutes of action and tied for the team lead in rebounds (5) with Kelsey Flaherty. Allie Beaulieu scored 15 points, including 12 in the second half as she shot 4-for-7 behind the arc to propel Bates' comeback.
The Bobcats fought back from a 45-38 deficit early in the second half with a 15-2 run that gave them their first lead since early in the second half at 48-47 with 15:45 left and put them ahead 53-47 with 13:31 remaining. The run was fueled by six points by Yanofsky and three-pointers by Kellie Goodridge and Beaulieu.
Colby rebounded with an 11-2 run of its own to take a three-point lead (58-55) with 10:08 left. The teams traded leads before the Mules embarked from a 62-62 tie to a 70-62 lead, fueled by a three by Ritchie and punctuated by a Ritchie layup.
A Beaulieu three cut it to 70-69 with 1:43 left, before Manduca's crucial shots iced the win for Colby.
All four of this weekend's Bates basketball games will be televised in Maine!
Friday's men's and women's basketball doubleheader against Bowdoin will be telecast by YNETV. The games will be shown on tape delay on WPXT-TV, Maine's CW network affiliate. The men's game will air on Saturday, January 23, at 8:30 p.m., and the women's game will be air on Sunday, January 24, at 4:30 p.m.
The broadcasts of the Colby games, which will be produced by Zinger Video Productions, are to be shown on Time Warner Cable Channel 9, with the women's game slated for Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. and the men's game airing on Jan. 26 at 8 p.m.
