Yanofsky named to NEWBA All-New England team

Lauren Yanofsky '10 has been named First Team All-NESCAC, Second Team All-New England and Second Team All-State this year.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College senior Lauren Yanofsky added Second Team All-New England honors to her haul of postseason honors on Tuesday, as the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) released its annual awards.

Yanofsky has already been named First Team All-Conference by the NESCAC, as well as Second Team All-State by the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association (MWBCA), and she has been selected to play in the annual NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic at Western New England College on March 27.

Yanofsky, a 5-foot-11 forward, was perhaps Bates' most explosive and versatile player this season. She led the Bobcats (14-12) in scoring (15.1 ppg), rebounding (6.4 rpg) and blocked shots (1.96 bpg), all career highs, and ranked third, 11th and second, respectively, among conference players in those categories. She also ranked 12th in the NESCAC in steals (1.69 spg) and was second on the Bobcats in assists, with 2.1 per game. Out of 26 games this season, she led the Bobcats in scoring 15 times and rebounding 14 times. She also scored in double figures in 23 of 26 games, including the final 11 contests of the season.

In Bates' final game this season, a loss to No. 1-ranked Amherst in the semifinals of the NESCAC Championship, Yanofsky netted her 1,000th career point, becoming the 17th Bates woman to reach that milestone. She finished her career with 1,001 points, 460 rebounds, 174 assists, 127 steals and 120 blocked shots -- only seven shy of the Bates career blocks record of 127 held by Laura Hollingsworth '83.

Yanofsky twice earned Player of the Week awards this season, but this is the first postseason award of her collegiate career. She was named NESCAC Player of the Week on Dec. 14, 2009, then shared Maine Co-Player of the Week honors with Bowdoin's Katie Bergeron on Feb. 2, 2010.
