Burns, Kelly named to Maine All-State women's hoop teams

Annie Burns '12 helped Bates become one of the most potent offenses in Division III, despite scoring only 5.4 points per game on her own.
Meredith Kelly '14 has claimed NESCAC Rookie of the Year and Maine All-Rookie Team honors.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Two players on the Bates women's basketball team were recognized on Thursday, as the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association released the Maine All-State teams. Bates junior guard Annie Burns was voted Second Team All-State, while first-year guard Meredith Kelly was named to the Maine All-Rookie Team.

It is the first postseason honor for Burns (Topsfield, Mass.), who led the NESCAC in assists for the second straight year, with 6.44 per game, and also led the conference in steals, with 2.64 per game. The 5-foot-6 point guard also scored 5.4 points and grabbed 3.4 rebounds per game, shot free throws at a .794 clip (27-34) and made three-pointers at a career-best .405 percentage (17-42). She was named Maine Co-Player of the Week by the MWBCA on Jan. 10.

With Burns directing much of the traffic when Bates had the ball, Bates ranked fifth among all Division III teams in assists per game, at 18.1, eighth in team three-point percentage (a team record 37.8%) and seventh in assist-to-turnover ratio, at 1.14. Burns herself ranked fifth in Division III in assists per game, ninth in assist-turnover ratio (2.3) and 89th in steals per game (2.7).

Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) receives her second postseason honor -- she was also named NESCAC Rookie of the Year last week.

Kelly played in all 25 of Bates' games this season as the Bobcats went 17-8, scoring 7.6 points per game on .476 shooting while grabbing 2.9 rebounds and 1.4 steals per contest. Kelly topped all rookies in the NESCAC in scoring and field goal percentage.

The 5-foot-8 guard hit 80 of 168 field goal attempts on the season, and her .476 field goal percentage ranked her eighth in the conference. In conference games, Kelly's shooting percentage rose to .526. Kelly was also a tenacious perimeter defender, and she averaged 1.44 steals per game, 14th best in the NESCAC. Kelly twice won Rookie of the Week honors this season from the MWBCA.

Record-Setting Performances by the Bobcats in 2010-11

The 2010-11 Bobcats were one of the sharpest-shooting squads in program history: they obliterated the former team record for three-point accuracy of .350 with a scorching .378 team percentage. They also set the record for free-throw shooting percentage at .725. They also had the third highest overall field goal percentage in program history, at .422, close behind the 2008-09 team's record of .425.

Sophomore Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) matched the team record for three-pointers in a game, with six against St. Norbert in December, tied with four other performances: three by Lauren Dubois '04 and one by Carla Flaherty '03.
