NORTHFIELD, Vt. -- Senior Kelsey Flaherty (South Portland, Maine) flirted with a triple-double and earned tournament MVP honors as she led the Bates women's basketball team to a 74-62 win over host Norwich University on Saturday in the championship game of the Hockenbury Classic.
A day after posting a career-high nine rebounds, Flaherty notched new career highs in points (17) and assists (10). She also came down with seven boards and shot 5-9 from the floor, 6-7 from the free-throw line.
Flaherty was joined on the all-tournament team by Bates sophomore Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.), who scored 10 points and grabbed seven rebounds, a day after posting a career-high 21 points in Bates' win over Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.
Junior Taryn O'Connell (Georgetown, Mass.) submitted an impressive 14 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Junior Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) added 12 points and five rebounds. Senior guards Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) and Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) combined for eight points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and four steals. Junior Brianna Hawkins (South Portland, Maine) chimed in with eight points and six rebounds.
Aliah Curry led the Cadets (2-5) with 15 points, albeit on 5-26 shooting from the field. Jocelyn Fasulo had 11 points and 11 boards.
Bates took a 32-29 lead into halftime, then started the second half with a 10-0 run that put the Bobcats ahead 42-29, after a Flaherty-assisted three by Beaulieu with 15:33 to go. Norwich's Kelsey Lotti answered with a three of her own, but Flaherty again fed Beaulieu for a three to re-establish the 13-point cushion.
O'Connell then took over, scoring 12 points over the next seven minutes, capped by a jumper that made it 65-46 with 6:49 left in the game.
Norwich quickly cut the lead to nine with a 12-2 run to the 3:47 mark. But Flaherty drained a three from Burns and the Bobcats kept their lead in double digits the rest of the way.
