WATERVILLE, Maine -- A pair of rookies led the way for the Bates women's basketball team in a 74-57 non-conference loss at rival Colby on Monday night.
First-year forward Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.), playing in only her fourth game of the season and her first since Dec. 3 due to injury, scored a team-high 13 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the floor, including 3-of-4 from three-point territory. Brown is averaging 10.5 points per game in her limited action thus far.
First-year center Allaina Murphy (Poland Spring, Maine) tallied a season-high 12 points, including a 6-of-6 effort at the free-throw line, as the second and final Bobcat to score in double figures. She also tied sophomore Callie Cramer (Dedham, Mass.) for the team lead in rebounds, with four. Senior Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) handed out a team-high five assists.
Rachael Mack led the Mules (7-1) with 20 points on 9-of-12 shooting, including the 1,000th of her career. Jil Vaughan added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Aarika Ritchie also contributed 13 points and four assists.
The Mules shot 51 percent for the game and had a 35-30 rebounding edge. Colby led by as much as 15 points in the opening half at 43-28 before taking a 10-point lead into intermission. The Mules used a 7-0 run to start the second half and take control of the game.
Bates (5-5) next plays at the University of New England on Wednesday at 7pm. Follow the game online via video webcast and live stats. The game will serve as the final one before the team commences its NESCAC schedule this weekend, with a game at Middlebury on Friday at 6pm followed by Saturday's 2pm contest at Williams.
