PRESQUE ISLE, Maine -- The Bates women's basketball team finished the 2011-12 season with a long road trip to UMaine-Presque Isle, and made sure the drive home was a cheerful one, notching an 88-62 non-conference victory over the Owls, propelled by a game-opening 26-2 run and 12-for-14 3-point shooting.
Bates (11-13) got started with a 3-pointer by senior Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) 22 seconds into the game. UMPI's Rashell Saucier countered with a jumper to make it 3-2, but the Bobcats reeled off 24 unanswered points between the 18:55 mark and 11:19 remained in the first half, when junior Brianna Hawkins' (South Portland, Maine) jump shot made it 26-2.
In between, the Bobcats rained in five 3-pointers after Burns': senior Kelsey Flaherty (South Portland) nailed back-to-back trifectas to make it 11-2, followed by three threes in a row, by senior Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.), first-year Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.) and junior Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.).
UMPI (8-15) got off the mat with nine unanswered points to close it to 26-11, but that was as close as the Owls would get the rest of the way. The Bobcats took a 48-24 lead at halftime and cruised through the second half.
Bates' 12 3-pointers matches the team's single-game record, set two previous times: in the 2004-05 season against Mount Ida, and earlier this season, Dec. 6 against Thomas.
Eleven Bobcats scored in the game, including five in double figures. Beaulieu led the way with 12 points, hitting all four of her three-point attempts. Dobish and sophomore Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) scored 11 apiece, and Flaherty and Brown added 10 points each. Sophomore Callie Cramer (Dedham, Mass.) scored a career-high nine points. Burns scored eight points to go with three steals, and first-year Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) tied Dobish with a game-high five assists.
