Ramachandran leads MIT past women's basketball

SALEM, Mass. -- MIT raced out to a big lead thanks to white-hot shooting in the first half and never looked back, as the Engineers cruised past the Bates women's basketball team 74-51 in the consolation game of the 2012 Salem State Tip-Off Tournament at the O’Keefe Center.

Mari Kordell had a game-high 21 points and Maya Ramachandran recorded her second straight double-double to lead the way for MIT, which improved to 1-1. Bates fell to 0-2.

After the Bobcats scored the game’s first basket, MIT tore off nine straight points, including five from Tamara Pena. The Engineers built the lead to 15, 30-15, on a jumper by Alexxis Isaac, and cruised into the locker room with a 38-28 advantage. MIT shot a blazing 58% (18-31) in the first 20 minutes, while Bates shot 31% (10-32).

The Bobcats crept within four in the opening minutes of the second half, as senior captain Taryn O’Connell (Georgetown, Mass.) hit a pair of jumpers to cut the deficit to 39-35. MIT broke the game open, however, with an 11-0 run, led by six points from Isaac and a 3-pointer from Kordell. Bates would not get closer than 11 the rest of the way.

Ramachandran was a force inside, scoring 11 points and grabbing 15 rebounds, while finishing with seven blocked shots. She was named all-tournament for her two-game performance, including a 14-point, 19-point, eight-block outing against Salem State on Saturday.  Isaac added 18 points and Pena finished with 14, as the Engineers shot 52% (31-60) for the game.

Bates was led by all-tournament selection Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.), who scored a team-high 16. O’Connell was the only other Bobcat in double figures, with 14 points. Bates shot just 29.4% (20-68) from the field and was outrebounded 46-34.

Senior captain Allie Beaulieu (Swampscott, Mass.) scored seven points and led the Bobcats with four assists. Sophomore Allaina Murphy (Poland Spring, Maine) led Bates with seven rebounds.

The Bobcats will play host to Southern Maine on Tuesday at 5:30pm. (Video / Live Stats)
