BRUNSWICK, Maine – Bates College women's basketball fell to Bowdoin College, 76-40, in a non-conference match-up between the two teams inside Morrell Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The Polar Bears (4-0) netted 21 straight points as part of a 40-14 second half to distance themselves from the Bobcats (3-2).
For Bates, senior Meredith Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) and sophomore Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.) each scored 11 points while junior Allaina Murphy (Poland Spring, Maine) recorded six points and five rebounds. Off the bench, junior Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) chipped in with five rebounds and three assists.
Four players scored in double figures for Bowdoin with Shannon Brady leading all players with 16 points to go with six rebounds. Kirsten Prue totaled 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists while connecting on 4-of-7 shots from beyond the arc.
Sara Binkhorst posted a double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Megan Phelps compiled 15 points and five boards.
Holding a 14-12 edge just under eight minutes into the game, the Polar Bears used a 10-0 run to seize a 24-12 lead with 8:33 left in the first half. A jumper from Murphy at the 7:13 mark broke the run.
The Bobcats responded as four points from Murphy and a jumper from Julia Rafferty (Reading, Mass.) capped a 10-2 spurt for the visitors cutting their deficit to 26-22 with 2:51 to play in the opening stanza. The Polar Bears outscored Bates 10-4 over the remainder of the period despite a 3-pointer from Nason to take a 36-26 advantage into halftime.
After a Kelly layup opened the second half, Bowdoin scored 21 consecutive points to capture a 57-28 lead with 11:06 to play. A 3-pointer from Nason ended the hosts' run and the visitors' scoring drought of over 11 minutes.
Next, Bates will play at Southern Maine on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
