LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates women's basketball team was represented in both Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week honors Tuesday by the Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association. Senior Meredith Kelly is one of three players to be named Maine Player of the Week, and first-year forward Allie Coppola received Maine Rookie of the Week laurels.
It is the third such honor for both players this season, and it comes a day after the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) named Coppola the New England Rookie of the Week and put Kelly on its weekly honor roll.
Kelly (Cohasset, Mass.) averaged 22.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals as Bates went 1-1 in its final weekend of the season, with a loss to No. 21 Bowdoin on Saturday and a 67-40 win in the season finale over Colby on Saturday. She finished the season with a 21.6 points-per-game scoring average, breaking the former team record of 20.0 set by Julia Roche in 1989-90. Kelly also became Bates' first player to score 500 points in a season en route to 24 points in a 67-40 win over Colby in the Bobcats' season finale on Saturday.
Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.) averaged 15.0 points, 9.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game while shooting .933 (14-15) at the free-throw line. Coppola collected 19 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the Bowdoin game, then racked up her seventh double-double of the season against Colby with 11 points, 10 boards and three assists.
