CASTLETON, Vt. -- Seniors Kristin Calvo and Molly Brown led the way in the Bates women's basketball team's season opener, as the Bobcats cruised to a 76-58 win over Elms College on Saturday afternoon, at the Rutland Herald Tipoff Classic hosted by Castleton State.

Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) netted a game- and career-high 17 points and added six assists for Bates (1-0), while Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.) contributed 16 points, a career-high six assists and six rebounds in her first game since Feburary 2013. Brown, a team co-captain this year with sophomore Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.), missed her entire junior season with injury.

Elms (0-1), which finished 18-10 a year ago, was led by Emily Burr's 14 points and Gianna Youngblood's 13. Youngblood made 3-of-4 shots from beyond the arc. Mariah Brown pitched in with eight points, four assists and six rebounds for the Blazers.

Coppola snagged a game-high 15 rebounds for Bates in addition to six points, and junior Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.) notched a double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. The frontcourt combination led the Bobcats to a 54-39 advantage on the glass.

Sophomore Bernadette Connors (Windham, N.H.) pitched with 12 points and four assists, tying career highs in both categories. Bates totaled 20 assists on 27 field goals made.

Nason had 11 points and nine rebounds before intermission to stake Bates to a 41-35 lead at the break. Bates then began the second half with an 11-2 run, with all five starters making hoops in the run as the Bobcats opened up a 52-37 lead.

Three-pointers by Calvo and first-year Emily Freedland (Marblehead, Mass.), followed by a Brown layup and Connors jumper, helped Bates build a 20-point advantage at 62-42 with 11:47 left. First-year Alanna Morque (Rye, N.Y.) later scored six points in an 8-2 Bates burst, and Brown answered a Youngblood three with one of her own, assisted by Calvo. Brown then assisted Calvo on a layup to make it 76-50 with 6:24 remaining in the game.

Bates will take on Castleton on Sunday at 2pm. The host Spartans went 56-6 over the past two seasons, including a 64-62 win at Bowdoin en route to the Sweet 16 in last year's NCAA tournament.
