WATERVILLE, Maine -- Mia Diplock scored 21 points and Carylanne Wolfington added 20 to lead Colby College to a 79-54 win over the Bates College women's basketball team on Sunday in Wentworth Gym, in the annual non-conference matchup between the NESCAC rivals.
Colby (6-0) remained unbeaten while dealing Bates (5-3) its first loss in three games. It was the Mules' first win over the Bobcats since January 2012, snapping a four-game win streak in the series for Bates.
Sophomore Bernadette Connors (Windham, N.H.) led Bates in scoring with nine points to go with six rebounds and a team-high four assists. Sophomore Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.) added eight points and eight rebounds. Senior Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) also netted eight points and junior Chelsea Nason (Boxford, Mass.) contributed six points, six rebounds and three blocked shots. First-year guards Lyse Henshaw (Brunswick, Maine) and Emily Freedland (Marblehead, Mass.) combined for 13 points off the bench.
The Mules shot 55.2 percent from the floor in the first half to jump out to a 16-point lead by the break. Diplock scored 12 points and Caitlyn Nolan added 10 in the period, making 4-of-5 shots from the field.
Bates (5-3 overall) entered the game on the heels of a big come-from-behind 61-60 win against University of Southern Maine, but Colby took control right from the start with six straight points to begin the game.
With the Mules leading 18-14 with 9:54 remaining, Colby went on a 13-0 run to push the lead to 21-14 with 7:19 to go. Diplock had two 3-pointers during the run, and the Mules went into halftime with a 44-28 lead.
Bates got as close as 11 points at 44-33 when Nason scored inside. The Mules, however, used an 11-0 run to push the margin to 55-33 with 16:33 to play.
Colby continued to widen the score and held its largest lead of 32 points when Nolan hit two free throws for a 71-39 lead with 7:33 remaining.
Diplock shot 9-for-13 from the field and 3-for-5 effort from 3-point range to go along with four steals. Wolfington made four of her seven 3-point shots. Nolan added her first collegiate double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. MaryKate Caverly finished with 12 points on 4-for-6 shooting and added three assists and three steals.
