MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Wesleyan University had no answer for Bates first-year forward Nina Davenport, who poured in 29 points, more than doubling her season high, but the Bates women's basketball team still fell 69-56 at Wesleyan University on Friday night.
Bates (9-9, 0-5 NESCAC) visits Connecticut College (13-5, 3-2) on Saturday at 3pm.
After breaking a 4-4 tie with a three-pointer from Danielle Gervacio with a 16:04 left in the first half, Wesleyan (8-9, 1-4 NESCAC) led the rest of the way. The Cardinals extended the shot into a 9-0 run for a 13-4 advantage. Bates never got closer than six the rest of the evening, as Wesleyan led by 11 at halftime, 36-25, after leading by as many as 16 (32-16) in the first half. The game's largest edge came with eight minutes to play at 17 (56-39).
A 14-4 Bobcat burst in the second half trimmed the deficit to seven (60-53) with 3:21 left as Davenport sank a pair of free throws. But the Cardinals netted nine of the final 12 points for the 13-point triumph.
Wesleyan had five players reach double-digits in scoring led by Jess Cherenza with a double-double as she picked up 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting along with 15 rebounds. Also with a double-double off the bench in 18 minutes of action was Brenna Diggins (10 points, 10 rebounds). Kaylie Williams added 14 points, going 6-for-7 from the field, and collared seven rebounds while Jackie Browne had 11 points. Gervacio finished the game with 10 points and seven assists.
Bates got a double-double from sophomore Allie Coppola (Tarrytown, N.Y.), who posted 14 points and 14 caroms, both above her averages of 10.9 and 11.3, respectively. Senior Kristin Calvo (South Deerfield, Mass.) and sophomore Bernadette Connors (Windham, N.H.) both dished out five assist for the Bobcats.
