AMHERST, Mass. -- Nina Davenport led all scorers with 15 points and Allie Coppola recorded a double-double but the Bates women's basketball team fell to No. 3 Amherst by a final score of 63-44 Friday night.
Amherst (21-0, 7-0 NESCAC) shot 40% from the field compared to 29.6% for the Bobcats (6-13, 2-6 NESCAC).
Bates never led in the contest. Amherst opened the game on a 9-2 run.
Davenport '18 (Freeport, Maine) scored seven of the Bobcats' nine points in the first quarter. Her three-pointer with 2:02 left in the quarter cut the Amherst lead to 12-9. But Amherst promptly went on a 6-0 run to take an 18-9 lead into the second quarter of action.
Coppola '17 (Tarrytown, N.Y.) got the scoring started in the second quarter with a layup to pull Bates to within six. She finished the night with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds. Coppola's 16 boards matches her season-high.
The Bobcats hung with undefeated Amherst through much of the second quarter. Bernadette Connors '17 (Windham, N.H.) hit a jumper with 5:02 remaining to cut the Amherst lead to 24-18.
But a 15-3 run to end the half put Amherst fully in control and they never looked back.
While Davenport, Coppola and Connors combined for 37 points, the rest of the Bobcats combined for only seven. Meanwhile Amherst used a balanced attack led by Meredith Doswell (12 points on 5-7 shooting), Jackie Nagle (11 points on 4-7 shooting) and Hannah Hackley (10 points on 4-13 shooting).
Bates turned the ball over 15 times while Amherst only turned it over eight times on the night.
The Bobcats head to Trinity Saturday afternoon to take on the Bantams. Opening tip is set for 3:00 p.m.
