AMHERST, Mass. -- The No. 6 Amherst women's basketball team used a big first quarter to defeat Bates 82-29 Saturday in the NESCAC tournament quarterfinals.
Amherst (24-1) out-scored the Bobcats (9-15) 31-9 in the first quarter and didn't look back.
Nina Davenport '18 (Freeport, Maine) paced the Bobcats with eight points while Allie Coppola '17 (Tarrytown, N.Y.) hauled in a team-high 11 rebounds. Coppola also chipped in five points and tallied two steals.
Four Amherst starters scored in double figures, led by Meredith Doswell. She finished with a game-high 22 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
Bates struggled from the field, shooting 19% on the day. Meanwhile Amherst shot 46.8% from the field in the contest. Amherst also shot the ball well from outside, hitting 9-22 threes while the Bobcats hit only two of their 15 attempted three-pointers.
Amherst jumped out to an early 5-0 lead but Davenport hit a three with 7:16 remaining in the first quarter to cut the deficit to 5-3.
Amherst proceeded to go on an 11-0 run to take a double digit lead. Amherst finished the first half strong as well, taking a 50-16 lead into the the halftime break.
Amherst out-scored the Bobcats 23-8 in the third quarter before Bates buckled down on defense in the fourth. In the final quarter of action the Bobcats held Amherst to only nine points.
The loss concludes the 2015-2016 season for the women's basketball team. Bates finishes the season with four conference wins, their most since they also won four NESCAC contests in the 2012-2013 season. Chelsea Nason '16 (Boxford, Mass.), the team's lone senior, scored four points and grabbed two rebounds in her final collegiate game.
