MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- No. 3 nationally ranked Middlebury defeated the Bates women's lacrosse team 18-5 on Kohn Field Wednesday. The Bobcats (7-5, 1-4 NESCAC) will host Tufts University on Saturday at 12 p.m.
Middlebury (8-1, 6-0), the first-place team in the NESCAC, jumped out quickly with three goals in the game's first 2:41. Bates scored two of the next three before the Panthers went on another three-goal run to take a 7-2 lead with 16:04 left in the first half. Kim Walker tallied two of her three first half goals during the spurt. Junior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored for Bates at the 12:39 mark, with Middlebury scoring the final two of the half for a 9-3 lead at the intermission.
Bates scored 29 seconds into the second half, before Middlebury went on a four-goal run with a pair from Mimi Schatz, to make it a 13-4 game at the 23:03 mark. First-year Avery Masters (Mill Valley, Calif.) scored Bates' final goal with 22:14 remaining as Middlebury netted the contest's final five goals.
Walker and Schatz scored four apiece to lead Middlebury, while Amanda Smith and Liza Humes each had two goals and two assists. Five different players -- Wagner, Master, junior Rachel Harmeling (North Reading, Mass.), first-year Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio) and first-year Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine) -- scored for Bates, with Wagner earning a goal and an assist.
Blaire Bowie picked up the win with six saves in 55 minutes, while junior Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) made 20 saves between the pipes for the Bobcats.
