Women's lacrosse beats Division II Penwomen







MANCHESTER, N.H. -- The Bates College women's lacrosse team overcame a 12-9 deficit to beat Division II Southern New Hampshire University 15-13 on Tuesday evening.

The host Penwomen (1-1) came back from an 8-6 Bates lead at halftime with a 6-1 run to start the second half, capped by Carole Lee's fourth goal with 21:51 left to play.

But sophomore Briana Gross (Andover, Mass.), who scored a game- and career-high five goals, started the visiting Bobcats (2-1) on their decisive comeback with two straight goals at 16:38 and 14:44 remaining. First-year Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) sandwiched a Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) goal with two of her own, and Gross capped a 6-0 Bates run with her fifth goal of the game, putting the Bobcats ahead 15-12 with 4:46 left to play.  Maura Murphy closed the gap to 15-13 with 1:54 to play, but Bates held off SNHU the rest of the way for the win.

Thomas scored three goals with one assist for Bates, while junior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) added two goals and two assists. Sophomore Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine) scored two goals with an assist, and Dannis added a pair of goals. Junior Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) also scored for Bates.

Lee scored four goals with two assists for the Penwomen, while Murphy added three goals and two assists. Emly Mongeau and Sherry Darrell scored two goals apiece, with Libby Parent adding a goal and three assists and Jennifer Parro also dishing out three assists.

Sophomore goalie Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) made nine saves for the Bobcats, while Hannah Moriarty made 12 saves for SNHU.

Bates will play host to Williams College in a NESCAC contest on Saturday at noon.
