No. 12 Babson holds off No. 15 women's lacrosse team

Joan O'Neill '12 scored a career-high four goals, all unassisted.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Kaitlyn Pettengill scored six goals and added two assists to lead No. 12-ranked Babson College to a 15-10 non-conference victory over the No. 15-ranked Bates College women's lacrosse team on Wednesday.

Anna Collins and Alyssa Hood both added three goals and three assists for the Beavers (4-2), while goalie Sarah Macary made 15 saves. Only five players figured into Babson's 15 goals -- Jamie Spang collected two goals and one assist, while Trish Babson added a goal and two assists.

Sophomore Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.) scored a career-high four goals for the Bobcats (1-2), who were playing in their home opener. Sophomore Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) added two goals while junior goalie Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) made nine saves, including seven in the second half.

Babson roared out to a 4-0 advantage in the first four minutes of the game, as Pettengill scored first on a Hood assist at 28:12 mark, followed by Spang scoring on a Pettengill assist at 27:45, Hood scoring unassisted at 27:20 and Pettengill making it 4-0 on a Collins assist with 26:01 left in the first period.

O'Neill finally responded with a quick score after she collected the ensuing draw control for her team-high fourth goal of the season. Trish Babson converted a free-position shot to boost the lead back to four at 5-1, but O'Neill converted a free-position goal of her own 29 seconds later to make it 5-2 with 22:26 to play. The high-scoring pace continued as Spang fed Hood for a goal off the ensuing draw control, which was answered by Bates senior Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) tallying an unassisted goal, her fourth of the year, off of the following draw control to close it to 6-3 with 21:18 to go. With 20:10 left in the period, Collins collected the ground ball off a Trish Babson miss and converted the putback for a 7-3 lead. That goal began a 5-1 Babson run that gave the Beavers their biggest lead of the game at 11-4 with 6:18 to go in the first.

The seven-goal edge lasted only 11 seconds, as O'Neill once again scored unassisted after collecting the draw control, and first-year Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.) added another tally before the period was over to send the teams into intermission with Babson on top 11-6.

Bates increased its aggressiveness in the second half, earning a 15-8 edge in ground balls and also drawing all three of its yellow cards during the period. But the teams played to a 4-4 stalemate in the period, allowing Babson to hold on to its comfortable lead. After Dannis scored her second free-position goal of the game with 7:53 to play, Bates cut the lead down to five in the final minute when senior defender Betsy Weidner (Simsbury, Conn.) intercepted a Babson pass near the Beavers' goal and fed senior Molly Dilworth (Yarmouth, Maine) streaking in for the Bobcats' only assisted goal of the contest.

The Bobcats outshot the Beavers 33-27 and collected 23 grounds balls to the Beavers' 14. Senior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) and Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio) tied for the team lead with four ground balls apiece, while Maciewicz and Dannis caused three Babson turnovers apiece.

Bates will next play host to Wesleyan in a NESCAC game on Saturday at 3 p.m. If you can't make it to Campus Avenue Field for the game, you can catch it live online via Audio Webcast and via Live Stats.
