Women's lacrosse upsets Colby in regular-season finale, 10-7

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College women's lacrosse team had already sewn up a spot in the NESCAC Women's Lacrosse Championship tournament earlier in the day, thanks to Wesleyan's win over Connecticut College. Then the Bobcats went out and defeated Colby for the first time since 1997 on Friday night, beating the sixth-ranked Mules 10-7 on their home field.

Junior Briana Gross (North Andover, Mass.) and first-year Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.) scored three goals apiece, and sophomore Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.) added two goals and an assist, to lead Bates scorers. Senior Molly Radis (Peaks island, Maine) and sophomore Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) added a goal and an assist apiece. Junior Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) made six saves in net.

Bates (7-7 overall, 3-6 NESCAC) earned the eighth seed in the NESCAC playoffs and will play at top-seeded Trinity College on Sunday at noon in a league quarterfinal game. Colby secured the third seed and will play host to either Tufts University or Middlebury College on Sunday at noon.

The Bobcats fell behind 1-0 when Colby’s Kathleen Kramer (Norwell, Mass.) scored 2:35 into the game. However, Bates quickly settled down and scored the next five goals for a 5-1 lead with 12:01 to the break. The Mules had five of the last six goals of the half and the teams went into intermission knotted at 6-6.

Bates’ defense did the job in the second half, holding the Mules (11-3, 6-3) without a goal for 26:49. The Bobcats received two goals from Brallier with 29:11 and 16:33 left in the game and Gross scored unassisted with 3:06 left for a 9-6 margin. The Mules cut the lead to 9-7 on a goal by Caroline Atwater (Catonsville, Md.) with 3:11 left, but Bates sealed the victory when Dannis scored with 3.3 seconds remaining.

Kramer paced Colby with three goals, while Kate Pistel (Amherst, Mass.) had one goal and one assist.
