No. 19 women's lacrosse blows past Nor'easters, 19-3

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.) had three goals and two assists, all recorded in the opening seven minutes of the game, as the No. 19 nationally ranked Bates College women's lacrosse team rolled to a 19-3 non-conference win over the University of New England on Sunday afternoon at Garcelon Field.
The Bobcats (7-4) won their fifth straight and their seventh in the past eight games, while the Nor'easters dropped to 4-11.
Bates ran out to a 10-0 lead with 17:28 left in the first half to keep the game clock running from that point onward throughout the game. UNE's first score came with 12:20 left in the first half, a score by first-year Angela Beaulieu (Weare, N.H.) assisted by sophomore Cara Cole (Norwood, Mass.), closing the gap to 11-1, but the Bobcats finished the half with three unanswered goals to lead 14-1 at intermission.
Bates made it seven unanswered goals with four more to start the second half, including two by first-year Liz Bassani (Havertown, Pa.) and the first two of the season for sophomore Isabel Ballard (Shaker Heights, Ohio), for an 18-1 lead with 16:49 left in the game.
First-year Hannah Tavella (Putnam Valley, N.H.) scored a pair of goals for UNE in the final 15 minutes, her team-high 37th and 38th of the season, to account for the game's final score. Tavella also led the Nor'easters with four draw controls.
Fourteen players entered the scoring column for Bates, led by O'Neill and junior attack Lindsay Thompson (Ipswich, Mass.), who came up with two goals and two assists. Sophomore Erin O'Connor (Avon, Conn.) dished out three assists, while sophomore Jenn Brallier (Chambersburg, Pa.), Bassani and Ballard scored two goals apiece. Other multiple-point scorers for Bates included first-year Michaela Brady (East Walpole, Mass.) with a goal and two assists, senior Briana Gross (Andover, Mass.) with a goal and an assist, senior Emily Howe (Carlisle, Mass.) with a goal and an assist and first-year Rosie Hale (Winchester, Mass.) with a goal and an assist. First-year Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.) scored once and led the Bobcats in caused turnovers (4) and ground balls (4), while Hale contributed three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Three goalies split time in net for Bates, with senior starter Mara Krueger (St. Louis, Mo.) collecting two of their combined total of three saves.
First-year goalie Samantha St. Pierre (Mechanic Falls, Maine) made 11 saves in net for UNE.
Bates next plays a NESCAC game at rival Bowdoin on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
