Women's lacrosse pulls away from Endicott to win 14-6

LEWISTON, Maine -- The 20th-ranked Bates women's lacrosse team outshot Endicott 26-10 and outscored the Gulls 10-3 in the second half, to pull away for a 14-6 non-conference victory on Tuesday at Garcelon Field.

The Gulls (3-2) rallied from a 2-0 deficit over the first 13 minutes to tie the game at 3-3, before Bates senior Caroline Pierce (Weston, Mass.) scored with 2:02 left in the first half for a 4-3 Bates lead at intermission. Endicott outshot Bates by a 12-11 margin in the half.

But Pierce's goal was the first of eight unanswered goals by the Bobcats, a span that stretched all the way until 10:41 remained in regulation, when senior Joan O'Neill (Westwood, Mass.) scored her 20th goal of the season on a feed by senior Maggie Reilly (Wellesley, Mass.), which gave O'Neill her fifth hat trick in as many games this season and gave Bates an 11-3 lead.

Senior Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.) won the opening draw of the second half and raced upfield to score an unassisted goal 12 seconds into the period, setting the tone for what was to come. Sophomore SooHee Yoon (Lexington, Mass.), who netted her first two career goals Saturday against Wesleyan, then got into the scoring act again. At the 24:47 mark she burst through the Endicott defense, drew a foul and scored on a free-position attempt for a 6-3 Bates lead. Dannis controlled the next draw, and at 24:11 O'Neill found a cutting Yoon for another tally.

Bates' rookies then got into the act, as NESCAC Player of the Week Kathy Yannopoulos (Simsbury, Conn.) sandwiched a goal by fellow first-year Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) with a pair of 8-meter goals, which was then followed by O'Neill's third of the game with 10:41 left in the game.

Endicott junior Holly Davis (Guilford, Conn.) ended Bates' run, controlling the ensuing draw before notching her second tally of the game, and her 15th of the season, on an assist by sophomore Callie Murphy (Woburn, Mass.). Davis controlled the next draw, too, which quickly led to another Endicott score by Murphy, assisted by sophomore Rachel Campos (Shrewsbury, Mass.). But Yoon and Getsinger got the Bobcats back on top by eight both finishing off aggressive drives toward the net with unassisted scores to make it 13-5 with 8:44 left.

O'Neill finished with three goals and an assist to lead Bates' scoring, while Yoon scored three and Yannopoulos and Getsinger netted two goals apiece. Caroline Pierce led Bates with five ground balls, and junior Linnea Fulton (Bristol, R.I.) was a defensive force throughout the game, recording six caused turnovers and two ground balls as well as her first assist of the season. Senior Leah Elsmore (Broadview Heights, Ohio) made her first start in goal this season and made eight saves in the win.

Davis scored twice to go with one assist and four draw controls for Endicott, while Murphy contributed a goal and two assists. Senior goalie Leah Neff (South Berwick, Maine) made 11 saves.

Bates plays at Trinity College on Saturday at 12pm in a NESCAC contest. Endicott will next play at Southern Maine on Saturday at 4pm.
