BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Bates women's lacrosse team jumped out to a 5-1 lead and effectively preserved its lead the rest of the way in picking up the first win of the season, 12-7 at Endicott College in a non-conference game Wednesday.
The host Gulls dropped their record to 1-1.
The Bobcats (1-3) held off the Gulls each of the five times that Endicott pulled to within three scores. First-year Emma Brinkman (Rye, N.Y.) scored four goals and added an assist for Bates, which had a 35-19 shot advantage.
Kelly Tierney scored twice and had two assists to lead Endicott, while Rachel Socolow made 14 saves, many of them on point-blank efforts in the second-half to keep the Gulls within striking distance.
Brinkman scored twice in a three minute span, sandwiched around a goal by Bates junior Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.), who scored three times for the Bobcats, as the visitors jumped out to a 5-1 lead after Callie Murphy had tied the game at a goal apiece for the Gulls.
Tierney's first goal stopped the Bates run and Holly Davis scored her only two goals late in the second half to twice keep the deficit at three scores. Pierce and Endicott's Caitlin Pratt traded goals to make the halftime score 8-5 in Bates' favor.
Brinkman opened and closed the second half with goals and Pierce added her third, with junior Blair Shrewsbury (Boxford, Mass.) also connecting on a free-position goal for the visiting Bobcats in the period. Shrewsbury finished with a game-high six ground balls. The second half saw considerably less offense, with Tierney and Siri Mason the only Gulls to find the back of the net.
The Bobcats had the better of the draws, winning 15 of them to just six by the Gulls. Senior captain Linnea Fulton (Bristol, R.I.) and Pierce combined for seven draw controls.
In net for Bates, first-year Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) made eight saves on 15 shots on goal.
The Bobcats return to their NESCAC schedule on Saturday, traveling to Wesleyan for a 12pm start. (Video http://wescast.wesleyan.edu/
