LEWISTON, Maine -- Three members of the Bates College women’s lacrosse team were named All-Region Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association, including junior midfielder Wally Pierce's selection to the First Team.
Pierce (Weston, Mass.) was named to the IWLCA Pilgrim Region First Team, while senior defender Linnea Fulton (Bristol, R.I.) and sophomore midfielder Emma Getsinger (Darien, Conn.) received Second Team honors.
The players are now eligible for IWLCA All-America consideration, to be announced on Thursday, May 9.
Pierce had an exceptional season at both ends of the field, leading Bates in most major statistical categories: goals (26), points (32), draw controls (50), ground balls (40) and caused turnovers (22). She led the NESCAC, widely regarded as the top women's lacrosse conference in Division III, in draw controls per game (3.33), while also ranking second in ground balls per game (2.67) and ninth in caused turnovers per game (1.47). This is Pierce's second straight IWLCA All-Region honor.
Fulton, the Bobcats' co-captain, captures her fourth All-Region honors, one in each of her four seasons. The tireless defender started all 15 games for the Bobcats, ranking second on the team in draw controls (30), second in caused turnovers (16) and second in ground balls (24).
Getsinger assumed a far more prominent role in Bates' attack in her second year with the Bobcats, finishing the season with career highs in goals (23), assists (2) and ground balls (9). The speedy midfielder ranked second on the team in goals, fourth in points.
The IWLCA has honored 256 student-athletes in Division III with a selection on one of the All-Regional teams for 2013. The IWLCA will honor the national All-Americans at the IWLCA All-American banquet on May 25, at the Radisson Hotel Valley Forge in King of Prussia, Pa.
