No. 13 women's lacrosse falls to No. 19 Williams, 6-5

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – No. 13 Bates College women's lacrosse held a 5-3 lead late in the second half, but No. 19 Williams College scored three times inside of the last three minutes to pull out a 6-5 win on the Smith Turf Field at Smith College on Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcats (6-3, 2-2 NESCAC) held the Ephs (4-1, 3-1 NESCAC) scoreless for over 26 minutes in the second half, but the hosts came alive in the contest's waning moments to capture the victory.

Sophomore goalie Hannah Jeffrey (Greenwich, Conn.) made 14 saves in defeat while classmate Kelan McCann (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and senior Bridget Meedzan (Ipswich, Mass.) each netted two goals for the Bobcats. Senior Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.) won a game-high four draw controls.

For the Ephs, Bridget Malicki and Rebecca McGovern each posted two goals while net-minder Ali Pitch stopped nine shots in the win.

With Bates leading 3-2 at halftime, Malicki knotted the game at 3-3 just over a minute into the second stanza, but the Ephs would not find the back of the net again until they made their final push.

Senior Blair Shrewsbury (Boxford, Mass.) gave the lead back to the Bobcats, scoring off a free position shot at the 19:58 mark. Meedzan stretched the visitors' edge to 5-4 off another eight-meter shot with 16:59 remaining.

Neither team could break into the scoring column over the next 14 minutes until Maeve Mulholland scored off a feed from Stephanie Gallo to bring Williams within 5-4 with 2:32 left. Rebecca Bell tallied the game-tying goal 18 seconds later off an assist from Malicki, and McGovern notched the game-winner with 51 seconds to go.

Bates registered the game's first two goals as McCann and Meedzan struck in order just less than 11 minutes into the affair. After consecutive goals from Williams tied the game at 2-2 with 10:34 to play in the first half, McCann recorded her second goal of the game at the 2:02 mark to give the Bobcats a 3-2 lead at the break.
