Women's soccer deals Williams its first loss, 2-1
Kim Alexander '07
LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior Kim Alexander scored the game-tying and game-winning goals, as the Bates women’s soccer team came back from an early 1-0 deficit to claim a 2-1 NESCAC victory over the previously undefeated Williams College Ephs on Saturday.
Williams (7-1-1, 3-1 NESCAC) got on top very early on, as first-year (Brookville, N.Y.) Brianna Wolfson followed up first-year Sarah Walmsley’s (Pelham Manor, N.Y.) deflected shot to put the ball away for a goal in the fifth minute of the game.
The Ephs dominated the Bobcats at the onset of the first half, but the Bobcats began to carry play as the half drew to a close.
With six minutes left in the half, first-year Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) delivered a long pass from the left wing on Bates' half of the field to Alexander (Cumberland, Maine) in the middle. A defender on Alexander stumbled, and the senior found herself in a breakaway, shooting inside the far corner and past Williams senior goalie Sarah Ginsburg (Dallas, Texas).
Bates scored again, twenty minutes into the second half. First-year Molly Radis (Portland, Maine) directed a corner kick to senior Mary Bucci’s (Norfolk, Mass.) head. Bucci nodded the ball down for Alexander to shoot and score the game-winning goal.
Though Bates controlled much of the game, Williams threatened with some dangerous offensive opportunities. Bates sophomore keeper Mia Lidofsky (Providence, R.I.) protected the Bobcat goal from some potential Williams finishes, coming up with eight saves in total.
Ginsburg made 11 saves, as Bates accumulated a 21-10 edge in shots.
Bates (6-3, 3-3 NESCAC) will play at home against Endicott on Monday, Oct. 9th at 4 p.m.,on the road against Southern Maine on Wednesday Oct. 11th at 4 p.m., and home versus conference opponent Wesleyan on Saturday Oct. 14th at 11 a.m.
