Women's soccer team suffers first loss of season at Amherst
AMHERST, Mass. -- The Bates College women's soccer team dropped its opening game of NESCAC play on Saturday, 3-1 at Amherst. The No. 10 nationally ranked Bobcats fell to 2-1 overall, 0-1 NESCAC, while the Jeffs stayed undefeated at 3-0 on the (2-0 NESCAC).
Stephanie Yesnik (Arlington, Va.) got the scoring started for the Jeffs, finding the top right corner of the net in the 15th minute to give the Jeffs the 1-0 lead. But junior forward Katie Coffey (Florence, Mass.) hit teammate Amy Armstrong (Avon, Conn.) at the top of the box, setting up a goal that gave the Jeffs the 2-0 lead. In the 20th minute of the first half, coffey capitalized on a rebounded save by Bates keeper Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif.), putting in the header to widen the margin to 3-0.
Bates senior defender Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) scored in the 75th minute on an assist from sophomore midfielder Julie Brown (Lynnfield, Mass.), cutting the lead to 3-1.
Amherst goalkeeper Piper Crowell (San Rafael, Calif.) notched seven saves on the day.
Spalding turned away five shots from Amherst in the first half. Sophomore Mia Lidofsky (Providence, R.I.) made two saves in goal in the second half.
The Bobcats play at Trinity College on Sunday at 11 a.m.
