LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior midfielder Ali Emery took care of all the scoring as the Bates College women's soccer team opened its 2007 season with a 2-0 victory over in-state rival Husson College on Tuesday afternoon.
Emery (Richmond, Vt.), who entered the game with five career goals, converted once in each half, and each time in impressive fashion. In the 21st minute she stepped into a backward pass from sophomore forward Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) in the penalty area and rocketed a shot over Husson goalie Tatyana Wolterbeek's (Moody, Maine) reach, scraping the underside of the crossbar and into the net.
In the 64th minute Emery received a pass from senior midfielder Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) and was isolated out on the right edge of the penalty area. This time Emery arced a shot over Wolterbeek and tucking inside the far post for a 2-0 lead.
Bates (1-0) outshot Husson (2-2-1) by a 31-5 margin and kept Wolterbeek particularly busy in the second half, where she made seven saves on Bates' 16 shots in the period.
Bates senior Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif.) made two saves for the shutout victory.
The Bobcats will play at Wellesley College on Thursday at 4 p.m.; Husson travels to Wheaton (Mass.) College on Sunday.
