LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's soccer team snapped an eight-game losing streak in a big way on Wednesday, with a 5-1 non-league win over in-state rival Southern Maine at Leahey Field.

The visiting Huskies (6-6) scored the first goal of the game, as first-year forward Danielle Poulin (Readfield, Maine) knocked the ball in off a rebounded save by Bates first-year goalie Brittney French (Auburn, Maine). But Bates (2-8) tied the game 10 minutes later on sophomore Jen Morse's (Bedford, Mass.) header off a Julie Brown (Lynnfield, Mass.) corner kick, and the Bobcats reeled off four more unanswered goals in the second half for the win.

Bates outshot Southern Maine by a 38-13 margin, putting Huskies junior goalie Mindy Morneault (Winterville, Maine) to the test. Morneault stopped 12 Bates shots, while French made six saves for Bates in her first career start.

Bates senior Ali Emery (Richmond, Vt.) scored what would become the game-winning goal in the 61st minute, collecting a free kick from the left wing by junior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) and one-timing it inside the near goalpost for her team-high third goal of the season.

Wagner assisted Bates' next score in the 76th minute, sending a corner kick to sophomore Avery Pierce (Weston, Mass.), who knocked the ball in from a scrum in front of the net.

Wagner then tallied her first goal of the season in the 83rd minute, gathering a loose ball, finding herself one-on-goalie and dribbling around Morneault before poking in the easy goal.

Bates junior Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) became the fourth Bates player to score her first goal of the season with 10 seconds left in regulation, taking a pass from first-year Hannah Porst (Madison, Wis.) and sending a left-footed rocket from the top of the penalty box to curve away from Morneault and inside the far post.

Bates plays at NESCAC foe Wesleyan University on Saturday at 11 a.m.
