Alper leads women's soccer team past Camels
Sam Alper '12 scored her second and third goals this season, putting Bates ahead for good in the first half.
LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year forward Sam Alper (Holliston, Mass.) scored two first-half goals to lead the Bates College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Connecticut College during Family and Friends Weekend at Russell Street Field.
The Bobcats (2-5 overall, 1-4 NESCAC) put the pressure on the Camels in the first half to take a 2-1 lead at intermission. Alper scored her first goal at 27:45 of the first half, when she tapped in a shot set up by senior Jen Marino (Methuen, Mass.) past Junior goalie Jenna Ross (Longmeadow, Mass.). Ross had a streak of 291 minutes without allowing a goal going into the game, which Alper ended at 318.
Alper's second tally (third of the season) of the first half was an open shot in the 33rd minute of competition, assisted by senior co-captain Julie Brown (Lynnfield, Mass.). Bates held a 15-5 shot advantage through the first half.
Connecticut College (4-3 overall, 0-3 NESCAC) battled back at 40:24 of the first half, when first-year forward Brigi Palatino (Ludlow, Mass.) scored on an unassisted breakaway. The Camels then turned up the intensity and outshot Bates 11-5 in the second half, but Bobcat sophomore goalie Brittney French (Auburn, Maine) turned away six of those shots, some in spectacular fashion, en route to 9 saves for the game. Ross recorded 8 saves for Connecticut College.
Brown added an insurance goal for Bates, her second of the season, with a shot from inside the penalty area in the 69th minute, as Marino collected her second assist of the game.
Bates will resume play on Tuesday in a non-league game at in-state rival University of Southern Maine.
