Women's Soccer Preview: Bobcats look to reclaim winning ways

Captain Avery Pierce will be counted upon to help set a hard-working example for the 2009 Bates women's soccer team.

LEWISTON, Mass. -- The Bates College women's soccer team, captained by senior defender Avery Pierce (Weston, Mass.) (a co-captain will be named once the team is selected), is looking to reestablish itself as one of the premier teams in the NESCAC -- the most competitive Division III conference in the country. Bates finished 6-8 in 2008, and missed out on a berth in the NESCAC Championships with a 2-7 conference record.

Says Carla Flaherty, now the team's co-head coach along with 16th-year veteran Jim Murphy, "The tone of the team will be set in pre-season as women's soccer works to prove that it's not how much talent you have, but how much of it you make use of."

Bates opens the season by hosting Connecticut College on Saturday, Sept. 12, and looks to get immediately on the winning track.
