Bates splits head women's soccer/women's basketball coach position

Jim Murphy '69 led the Bates women's soccer team to 146 wins over 16 seasons.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College is splitting the position of head women’s soccer/women’s basketball coach held by Jim Murphy ’69 for the past 17 years, Director of Athletics Kevin McHugh has announced.

Murphy will remain the head coach of the women’s basketball team, and the Bates Department of Athletics is currently undertaking a national search to hire a head coach for the women’s soccer team. McHugh expects the search will be completed by the end of April.

Murphy led the women’s soccer team since the 1994 season, amassing a 146-93-13 record in 16 seasons, including the 2005 NESCAC Women’s Soccer Championship and NCAA Division III Championship appearances in 1996, 1997 and 2005. Murphy also coached the team to two ECAC Championship finals, winning the title in 1998. In 2008, Carla Flaherty ’03 served as the team’s interim head coach while Murphy was on sabbatical, and Flaherty and Murphy shared co-head coach roles on the 2009 team. Murphy was the Bobcats’ sole head coach in the 2010 season, when he led the team to a 6-8-2 overall record and a berth in the semifinals of the NESCAC Women’s Soccer Championship (Bates advanced past Tufts on penalty kicks after a 0-0 tie in the conference quarterfinals.)

Murphy will enter his 18th year as head coach of the Bates women’s basketball team in the 2011-12 season, armed with a career record of 302-132. He ranks among the top 50 women’s basketball coaches in winning percentage, both active and all-time.
