BANGOR, Maine -- Husson University's Alex Laniewski scored a game-tying goal with two minutes left in regulation then netted the game-winner in the eighth minute of overtime to score a surprising 2-1 non-conference victory over the Bates College women's soccer team on Wednesday.
The Eagles improved their record to 7-4-0 on the season while the Bobcats fall to 2-3-1.
The Bobcats scored first, in the 16th minute on a goal by junior Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) off an assist from senior Meredith Poore (Duxbury, Mass.). The match remained at 1-0 for nearly the rest of the game, with both teams unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities. In the 65th minute, the Bobcats were denied a scoring opportunity when Eagles goalie Rozlyn Peterson came out to make a save, and the ball landed at the feet of Bates junior Sam Alper (Holliston, Mass.). Alper fired a shot on goal and with Peterson off her line, Husson's Katelyn Cloutier (Groveton, N.H.) headed the ball off the goal line.
With two minutes left in regulation, Laniewski found the back of the Bates net with her sixth goal of the season. Caitlyn Butterfield, drove a free kick into the box, which was won by Katie McLaughlin. Laniewski received the pass from McLaughlin, and scored to send the game into overtime.
Laniewski once again found the back of the net, with 2:47 left in overtime off a pass from Megan Clement. It was the third overtime contest of the season for both teams.
Husson tallied 21 shots to Bates' 19 on the game. Junior Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) tallied 11 saves while Petersen recorded 11 saves for Husson.
Bates next faces Tufts this Saturday at 12 p.m.
