Women's soccer blasts Southern Maine, 3-0

GORHAM, Maine -- The visiting Bates College women's soccer team received goals from three players en route to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Bobcats and improved their record to 3-4-1 overall. They now stand 26-1 all-time against USM. The Huskies drop to 4-8-0 overall.

The visitors got on the board early as junior Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) placed a through pass down the right side between two USM defenders for classmate Alix Vandeventer (North Attleboro, Mass.) to run onto and place a 10-yard shot past USM junior goalkeeper Kat Rothe for her second goal of the season. The goal came in the sixth minute of play.

That would be the only scoring in the opening half. USM had a good opportunity to equalize, but Cathy Wise's shot from the top of the 18-yard box glanced up and over the crossbar.

Bates' second goal looked like a replay of its first, just on the opposite side of the pitch. Rookie Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.) played a through ball to junior Courtney Talcott (Millbury, Mass.) who knocked a 12-yard shot past junior keeper Katie Cobb, who came on to play the second half, in the 52nd minute.

The final marker came in the 71st minute when rookie Kara Stefaniak (Needham, Mass.) crossed the ball from the left end-line into the box.  Cobb got a hand to the ball, but not enough to deflect it away from first-year Emily Wiener (Portland, Ore.), who slotted the ball into the empty net.

Junior Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) and rookie Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) combined for the shutout. Burns made five saves over 78-plus minutes before Schmelz came on.  Schmelz did not record a save over the final minutes. Rothe and Cobb combined to make seven saves.

Bates entertains NESCAC rival Williams College on Saturday at 2 p.m., during Parents & Family Weekend. Follow the action via live video webcast on Bates' First Team Broadcasting page.
