Women's soccer upsets No. 9 Williams, 2-1

Alix Vandeventer scored her third game-winning goal of the season with less than eight minutes left in the game.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior Alix Vandeventer scored with 7:47 left in the second half to send the Bates College women's soccer team to a 2-1 NESCAC victory over No. 9 nationally ranked Williams College on Saturday at Russell Street Field.

The game-winning play occurred when junior Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) sent a long cross from near the right sideline toward the far goal post, where Vandeventer (North Attleboro, Mass.) was able to get her foot on the ball and volley it into the net for her team-high third score of the season. All three of Vandeventer's goals this season have counted as game-winning goals.

It was a frustrating loss for the Ephs (6-3-1, 2-2-1 NESCAC), who had won three in a row over Bates and who outshot the Bobcats (4-4-1, 2-3-1 NESCAC) by a 30-9 margin in the game.

After Bates' starting goalie, junior Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.), left the game with an injury with 38:48 left in the second half and the game tied at 1-1, first-year backup keeper Anabel Schmelz (Monmouth Beach, N.J.) made her second collegiate appearance one to remember, making five saves as Williams piled up 19 shots over the entire second half, compared to only two for Bates.

Bates took an early 1-0 lead in the 10th minute of the game, as senior Meredith Poore (Duxbury, Mass.), from near the sideline, 30 to 35 yards away from the Williams goal, shot the ball over Williams goalie Julia Schreiber's (Cockeysville, Md.) head and inside the far corner.

Williams' leading scorer, junior Brett Eisenhart (Seattle, Wash.), answered with a low shot from 10 yards out into the far corner to tie the game at 1-1 20 minutes into the contest, Eisenhart's seventh goal of the year.

Bates plays host to UMaine-Farmington for a non-conference game on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
