Women's soccer topples Tufts, 1-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- First-year Dakota Donovan (Marblehead, Mass.) scored in the 67th minute to lift the Bates women's soccer team to a thrilling 1-0 victory over Tufts on Sunday at Russell Street Field.

The Bobcats (5-4-2, 2-4-2 NESCAC) posted their second 1-0 NESCAC win in as many days, after yesterday's win at Connecticut College, and they moved over the .500 mark with their third straight win overall.

Tufts dropped its second straight 1-0 decision after losing to Williams by that score on Saturday. The Jumbos stand at 6-4-2 overall and 4-3-1 in NESCAC play.

The game was well-played on both sides throughout its 90-minute duration, with the ball moving up and down both ends of the field. In the 67th minute, Bates midfielders Wally Pierce (Weston, Mass.) and Jaimie Cappucci (Saugus, Mass.) traded passes in a skillful surge up the left side of the field. Pierce then passed into the middle of the box, where Donovan won a loose ball and set up a left-footed shot into the left side of the net, where Tufts junior goalie Phoebe Hanley had no play.

Tufts turned up the heat over the final 12 minutes of the contest, keeping the ball mostly in the Bates end and attempting seven shots in that time, but Bates withstood the pressure to earn the win.

Bates senior Annie Burns (Topsfield, Mass.) made eight saves in the victory. For Tufts, sophomore Kristin Wright started and made three saves in the first half, while Hanley stopped two shots in the second half.

Bates next plays host to Middlebury on Saturday at 11 a.m. The game can be followed online via live video webcast and by live stats.
