Roller, Laverty, Gerrish all win at CSA Individual Nationals

PHILADELPHIA -- Bates College first-years Whitney Roller and Hannah Laverty and junior Charlotte Gerrish all earned wins at the College Squash Association Individual Championships, hosted this weekend by the University of Pennsylvania.

Roller (Haverford, Pa.) won her first-round match of the Women's Holleran (B) Division on Friday, defeating Sally Hatfield of Middlebury, 10-9, 9-6, 7-9, 9-7. In the bracket's round of 16, Roller lost in three sets to the No. 2 seed, Penn's Christina Matthias, 9-4, 9-3, 9-1. Put into the Holleran Main Consolation Draw, Roller lost in the quarterfinals to Cornell's Alex Cornett, 9-0, 9-2, 9-2.

Laverty (Brooklyn, N.Y.) lost her first-round matchup in the Holleran Division in five sets to Stanford University's Brooksie Riley, 9-3, 7-9, 1-9, 9-6, 9-0. But Laverty rebounded with three victories in the consolation draw, beating Hamilton's Lindsay Walsh 9-1, 9-2, 9-1, before dropping Bowdoin's Kate Gormley by a 9-1, 10-9, 9-2 score in the bracket quarterfinals. Laverty downed Middlebury's Hatfield in the bracket semifinals on Saturday by a 9-1, 9-2, 9-4 score, to advance to Sunday's bracket final against Bowdoin's Alex Franceschi. Franceschi finally ended Laverty's run with a  10-8, 9-3, 9-1 victory, finishing her first CSA Individual Nationals with a 3-2 record.

Also competing in the Holleran Division for the Bates women was Gerrish (Rye, N.Y.). Gerrish lost in the round of 32 to Cornell's Liza Stokes, 9-3, 9-5, 9-2. But in the consolation bracket Gerrish got the better of Wellesley's Ayako Kubodera in three sets, 9-1, 9-2, 9-0, before dropping out of the competition with a four-set loss to Bowdoin's Franceschi, 9-5, 8-10, 9-6, 9-2.
