Women's squash team's streak vs. Bowdoin comes to an end

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bowdoin College women's squash team defeated Bates for the first time since 2003, taking a 6-3 win over the Bobcats on Sunday afternoon. The 13th-ranked Polar Bears snapped a 10-match losing skid to their Lewiston rivals and stand at 11-9 this season, while the 12th-ranked Bobcats fall to 10-9.

The Polar Bears took control of the match by winning at the top five positions. Lauren Gesswein, Emilie McKenna and Elena Laird all claimed 3-0 wins in the top three spots, respectively, while Kate Gormley and Alex Franchesci earned key five-game wins at number four and five. Biz Gillespie was the other Bowdoin winner, taking a 3-2 decision at number seven.

Winning for Bates were junior Sarah Blomstedt (Gill, Mass.) at No. 6, first-year Stephanie Cabot (Dover, Mass.) at No. 8 and junior Sophie Runquist (Kent, Conn.) at No. 9.

Bates will travel to Princeton University for the CSA Team Nationals, starting Feb. 22.
