Ariffin accepts first loss as Cornell tops women's squash

CLINTON, N.Y. -- The No. 9 nationally ranked Bates women's squash team fell 9-0 to No. 7 Cornell on Sunday at Hamilton College, before the Bobcats went on to defeat the host and 18th-ranked Continentals 7-2 in a NESCAC match.

Cornell's Danielle Letourneau handed Bates first-year standout Nessrine Ariffin (Penang, Malaysia) her first collegiate loss. Ariffin and Letourneau were tied 1-1 before Letourneau outlasted Ariffin in the third set, 16-14, and went on to win the third set to drop Ariffin's individual record this season to 12-1.

Junior captain Cheri-Ann Parris (St. Philip, Barbados) played the most competitive match of the Cornell match, taking the first two sets from Jaime Laird at the No. 2 spot before Laird swept three in a row for a 3-2 (7-11, 6-11, 11-9, 14-12, 11-3) win.

Bates rebounded with a 7-2 win over Hamilton after the Cornell match. Parris, sophomore Samantha Matos (New York, N.Y.), and first-years Myriam Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.), Chloe Mitchell (Chatham, N.J.) and Lesea Bourke (Greenwich, Conn.) all dominated their games, picking up 3-0 victories for the Bobcats.

Sophomore Rakey Drammeh (New York, N.Y.) defeated Hamilton's Kelsey Bogle in the fourth set (11-4, 11-8, 4-11, 11-3). Junior Ali Bragg (Darien, Conn.) started strong with an 11-9 win over Hamilton's Elizabeth Morris in the first set, however, Morris proved to be too much for Bragg as she dropped the final three sets to concede the game to Hamilton (11-9, 9-11, 10-12, 8-11).

The Bobcats (11-4) return home to face No. 21 Tufts in a NESCAC match on Jan. 27 at the Bates Squash Facility.
