Parris '13 named national squash Player of the Week

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. -- Bates junior Cheri-Ann Parris was named Harrow Sports Women's College Squash Player of the Week, as announced by the College Squash Association today.

Parris (St. Philip, Barbados), the Bobcats' team captain, led the team to its first win ever over Williams, the NESCAC rival that Bates has faced 24 times since their first match in 1986.

Playing at the No. 2 position for the first time in her career this year (behind the Bobcats' new No. 1, first-year Nessrine Ariffin), Parris dropped the first game to Williams' Courtney Bogle before reeling off three straight games (9-11, 11-9, 11-5, and 11-9) en route to Bates' convincing 7-2 victory.

Bates head coach Pat Cosquer described Parris, now 4-1 individually this season, to the CSA website as an "'inspirational and passionate leader, who leads by example. She's the reason we are and will be successful.'"

This is the second time Parris has received the National Player of the Week award; she was also named on Jan. 19, 2011.

Bates, ranked 10th in the country on Dec. 4 (behind No. 9 Williams) now stands 7-1 and is primed to move up when the next national rankings are released. The Bobcats next take on No. 6 Stanford on Friday at 8pm at the Yale Round Robin.
