Women's squash sweeps Tufts, 9-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- The No. 9 Bates women's squash team took NESCAC opponent No. 21 Tufts in perfect form Friday evening at the Bates Squash Center. The Bobcats swept the Jumbos 3-0 in all nine games to take an easy 9-0 victory. Bates outscored Tufts 297-90 in total points.

Bates first-year Nessrine Ariffin (Penang, Malaysia) bounced back from her first loss of the season last weekend against Cornell without any hesitation, taking Tufts junior Jessica Rubine 3-0 (11-4, 11-5, 11-6) in the No.1 spot. Ariffin improves to 13-1 on the season. In the No. 2 spot, junior Cheri-Ann Parris (St. Philip, Barbados) defeated senior Mercedes Barba 11-4, 11-4, 11-5.

First-years Myriam Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.), Chloe Mitchell (Chatham, N.J.), Lesea Bourke (Greenwich, Conn.), and Rokya Samake (New York, N.Y.), sophomores Samantha Matos (New York, N.Y.) and Rakey Drammeh (New York, N.Y.), and junior Alison Bragg (Darien, Conn.) finished the 3-0 sweep in the rest of the ladder.

First-year Sugeiry Betances (New York, N.Y.) proved to have the longest game of the night, extended her exhibition game to four sets. Betances won the first set with little difficulty (10-2). She then dropped the second set 10-12 in a tiebreaker, before responding with a reciprocal win (12-10) in the third. Betances ensured the overall win with an 11-4 victory in the fourth set.

Bates (12-4) faces a long day on Saturday as they continue play in the Maine Event (co-hosted by Bates, Bowdoin, and Colby) at the Bates Squash Facility. The women take on George Washington at 1pm, Drexel at 8pm, and Mt. Holyoke on Sunday at 11am.
